GETTING TO THE REAL NEEDS: ANALYSIS OF SIMCOE COUNTY AND MUSKOKA DISTRICT DATE FROM THE NATIONAL SEX NOW SURVEY 2011

The Sex Now Survey report was produced by The Community Based Research Centre for Gay Men’s Health (CBRC) in Vancouver, British Columbia. CBRC has conducted the Sex Now survey in BC since 2002. Sex Now 2011, collected data from 8,607 men who have sex with other men between September 2011 and February 2012 from every province and territory. The survey was designed to investigate social determinants affecting gay and bisexual men’s health. This particular report was commissioned by the Gilbert Centre as part of the Real Needs study (see below) and supported by the Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN)’s Targeted Request for Funding – Impact Focused Research Program (RFA G945) and a Laurentian University Research Funds grant.

Grounding Prevention Practice in the Real Needs and Interests of Rural and Urban MSM in Simcoe Muskoka

The Real Needs Study identified the health needs and interests specific to gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in a mixed rural, suburban and small urban setting as well as to find relevant and timely ways to address their health requirements. The research, conducted over a one year period from June 2014 to June 2015, consists of qualitative and quantitative data gathered through online surveys and individual interviews.

Making it Better Today: Simcoe County LGBT Youth Needs Assessment Report 2012

In June of 2011 the Lesbian Gay Bi Trans Youth Line partnered with various community-based organizations and individuals in Simcoe County to implement their program, “Youth Line Loves Simcoe County” to build capacity and community for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth. In addition to developing an event with LGBT youth and their allies, the Community Partners Committee of Simcoe County conducted a county-wide needs assessment report engaging LGBT youth, allies, service providers and educators. The needs assessment entitled, “Simcoe County LGBT Youth Needs Assessment: Making It Better Today”, was supported by the Lesbian Gay Bi Trans Youth Line and funded through the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Community Partners Committee of Simcoe County was responsible for its development, implementation, analysis and dissemination.

Trans Community Poverty and Employment

In the spring of 2015, the Gilbert Centre conducted a short and informal survey with participant of the Simcoe Trans Q Women and Men’s group to start a discussion of the barriers faced by trans* individuals. The attached report is the findings with regard to employment, income barriers and access to health care.
